How To: Light Your Charcoal

Ignite your inner Pitmaster with these four quick and easy methods to lighting up your charcoal grill or BBQ smoker using Royal Oak Charcoal!
Method 1: Lighting charcoal with Royal Oak All-Natural Tumbleweeds
Step 1: Arrange a layer of charcoal on bed of grill.
Fill the bed of the grill with the appropriate amount of charcoal.
Step 2: Add All-Natural Tumbleweeds.
Place All-Natural Tumbleweeds in the middle of the charcoal. Use 1 Tumbleweed per 2 to 3 pounds of charcoal briquets or lump charcoal.
Step 3: Add additional charcoal to form a small pyramid.
Add additional charcoal on top of the base and the Tumbleweeds, forming a small pyramid to help increase coal-to-coal contact and help the fire spread. Tumbleweeds should be partially covered by charcoal. Keep the Tumbleweed end exposed to allow for lighting access.
Step 4: Light All-Natural Tumbleweeds.
With a long-stemmed lighter, light the end of the tumbleweed and wait as the fire spreads. When the charcoal is covered with gray ash, spread evenly and begin cooking.

Method 2: Lighting charcoal with a charcoal chimney
Step 1: Fill the chimney with charcoal.
Fill the chimney with the appropriate amount of charcoal.
Step 2: Add All-Natural Tumbleweeds or newspaper to the bottom and light it.
Add one to two All-Natural Tumbleweeds or sheets of newspaper and light it in several spots. Set the bottom chamber of the chimney over the lit Tumbleweed or newspaper and watch the flames light the charcoal.
Step 3: When charcoal is ready, pour out and spread evenly.
After approximately 10 minutes, you will notice the charcoal glowing and the flames flaring up through the top of the chimney. When the charcoal is covered with gray ash, pour them out, spread evenly and begin cooking.

Method 3: Lighting charcoal with Royal Oak All-Natural Lighter Fluid
Step 1: Arrange charcoal into a small pyramid.
Forming a pyramid or pile will help increase coal-to-coal contact and help the fire spread.
Step 2: Add All-Natural Lighter Fluid to the pyramid of unlit charcoal and light immediately.
Carefully apply lighter fluid over the charcoal. Use 1.6 fluid ounces per pound of charcoal. Light immediately after applying fluid. The lighter fluid will burn off cleanly in a few minutes leaving the charcoal fully ignited.
Step 3: Charcoal is ready when covered with gray ash.
In approximately 10 to 15 minutes or when the charcoal is predominately ashed over, spread evenly. Wait 5 minutes and begin cooking.

Method 4: Lighting Royal Oak Minit-Lite Charcoal Briquets
Step 1: Arrange charcoal into a small pyramid.
Arrange no more than 3 pounds into a pyramid. Forming a pyramid or pile will help increase coal-to-coal contact and help the fire spread.
Step 2: Light the charcoal. Light the charcoal immediately in several places.
Never use lighter fluid, gasoline, electric starter, or chimney style starter. DO NOT COVER GRILL UNTIL READY TO COOK.
Step 3: Charcoal is ready when covered with gray ash.
In approximately 10 to 15 minutes or when the charcoal is predominately ashed over, spread evenly. Wait 5 minutes and begin cooking.
